Holden began trading in 1928.The owners employed a young apprentice Ernest Holden in their vehicle workshops who went on to buy the business in 1943. Since Ernest, his son Tony and Grandson Tim have both followed in his footsteps, meaning to this day Holden remains a local family business. Despite this impressive history, the focus of this business remains firmly on the future.
Since joining the business Tim Holden has set about transforming it to operate in a more progressive and people centric way. He has flipped the traditional business model on its head.
Here Tim describes his approach…..
Before we had always considered .... what business results do we want to achieve? And then… how can we get our employees on board with that? Now we consider ... if all our employees have complete clarity and focus on their personal goals and are inspired to learn and grow, what could this business achieve? Our new Company purpose was born… to help employees create the lives they want.
The result of this approach has been a team of such engaged, high performing individuals, that we feel confident to set much bigger more stretching goals for our business. Recently for example we created a challenging 2020 strategy for our Volvo business by devising an action plan based around 3 pillars; our people, our performance and our customers.
To create a winning mind-set, we hired a huge auditorium and set it up like an awards event. For added impact we had the latest cars displayed, Volvo videos playing on large screens, music pumping and Swedish themed food! I took to the stage and shared my personal memories of the Volvo franchise; as a child watching my father at work right through to the present day. I wanted to highlight to everyone just how much this business means to me.
John Merrell from Volvo Cars UK kindly attended and presented to our employees the future of the Volvo brand and the synergy between what our two companies are setting out to achieve. We also shared the specific steps we are going to take each year to accomplish our strategy and finished our evening with a development session based on the psychology of success. This brought to life how each individual will play their role in ensuring the business smashes its goals and how this in turn helps us to create the lives we want.
To transfer this buzz of excitement and positivity into the every-day work environment, before leaving everyone wrote down and handed in a personal commitment they felt they could deliver to ensure the Holden Volvo 2020 strategy is achieved. We now use these commitments during our daily conversations to hold ourselves to account.
Together we are determined to make our Volvo business the jewel in crown.
