Planning a staycation? Here are three simple checks drivers should make before heading for the sunshine

2 min read 31 July 2026

With increasing flight prices and ongoing airport delays making overseas travel less appealing, more holidaymakers are choosing to explore the UK by car this year*.

Whether you’re heading to the coast, exploring the countryside or embarking on a family road trip, ensuring your vehicle is ready for the journey is just as important as packing your suitcase.

Here are three simple checks to make before setting off on a summer staycation.

1. Check the condition of your car

No matter how far you’re travelling, it is always a good idea to carry out a few basic checks before a long journey.

Make sure your car has plenty of fuel, and that the oil and coolant levels have been checked and topped up if required. Tyres should be safely inflated and in good condition, while all electrical systems should be working correctly.

Drivers should also check all exterior lights and replace any bulbs that are not working or appear dim. This is particularly important for those planning to travel early in the morning or late in the evening when visibility may be reduced.

Another commonly overlooked item is the wheel nut key. Ensure it is stored safely and is easily accessible within the vehicle. Without it, replacing a wheel in the event of a puncture can become much more difficult.

2. Test the battery

Many drivers associate battery problems with winter, but summer heat can be just as demanding on a vehicle’s battery.

High temperatures can accelerate battery degradation by increasing the heat trapped under the bonnet. This can cause the liquid inside the battery to evaporate more quickly, potentially affecting performance and increasing the risk of a flat battery.

Most car batteries last between three and five years, so it is worth having the battery checked if your vehicle is approaching that age or is regularly exposed to prolonged periods of warm weather.

A simple battery health check before travelling can help reduce the risk of an unexpected breakdown during your holiday.

3. Plan your journey and ensure your technology is ready

Technology plays an increasingly important role in modern motoring, especially for electric vehicle drivers.

If you’re travelling in an electric vehicle, it is worth planning charging stops in advance and using apps to check charger availability along your route. This can help avoid unnecessary delays and ensure a smoother journey.

Drivers using satellite navigation should also make sure maps and software are up to date, particularly when travelling to unfamiliar destinations. New road layouts and traffic changes may not be reflected on older systems.

If you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, remember to pack any charging cables and consider downloading your route in advance in case you encounter areas with limited mobile signal.

For those relying on smartphone navigation, ensure apps are fully updated and voice guidance is enabled to minimise distractions while driving.
